We know of Gibert by name only from the US Census of 1850 where he was shown living in Otselic, NY as 15 years old, the oldest child of Jehu and Elsa Babcock. His younger siblings were Alsina, Sarah, Silas and William. As mentioned, the Babcocks and several of their neighbors moved to Wisconsin in the early 1850’s. They were neighbors again in the township of Caledonia, near New London, Wisconsin. However, we don’t see any more record of Gilbert after 1850. Interestingly, in 1850 Gilbert was also counted in Linklaen, the next township west of Otselic, as a farmer on the farm of Perry Wolcott. Whether Gilbert migrated with his family to Wisconsin is not known and we don’t know his fate.
