The First Theory – Jehiel Babcock is Our Ancestor

For several years we pursued records to prove that Jehiel Babcock, born 1774 was the father of Jehu, born 1812. Jehiel Babcock bought farmland in the Town of Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York, in the part that became the Town of Wright in 1846. We could trace Jehiel back to James of Rhode Island in 1640. Jehiel’s older son, Walter, was well documented in the property records of the Towns of Schoharie and Wright. We discovered descendants of Walter who had their DNA tested, but none matched us. The lack of documentation to support Jehu’s relationship to Jehiel and the absence of DNA matches led us to seek a new theory. See more about theory 1.

The Second Theory – Amos Babcock is our Ancestor

DNA matches increasingly pointed to Amos and Zerviah (Wood) Babcock being our ancestors. Here are those DNA matches:

Amos Babcock (1739-1809) left a will in which he named his children and three of his grandchildren. Which of his kids was our ancestor? His daughters would not have passed on the Babcock name. After researching his sons, we found that Azariah, Amos III, Johnson, Cottrell, Frederick and Jonathan had no son consistent with Jehu. Benjamin, who lived at or near the home of Amos and Zerviah in Petersburg, NY his whole life, had 3 males aged 0 through 9 in 1820. In 1830, Jehu, about 18, was not with Benjamin, but was likely a farm hand for a neighbor and/or uncle.
